Periodontal disease affects nearly half of American adults over the age of 30, according to the CDC. Despite its prevalence, many people do not recognize the early warning signs until significant damage has occurred. Here are five signs that it may be time to see a periodontist.

1. Bleeding gums during brushing or flossing. Healthy gums should not bleed when you brush or floss. If you notice pink in the sink, it could indicate gingivitis — the earliest stage of gum disease that is still reversible with professional treatment.

2. Persistent bad breath. Chronic bad breath, or halitosis, that does not improve with brushing and mouthwash may be caused by bacteria trapped in deep periodontal pockets below the gumline.

3. Red, swollen, or tender gums. Healthy gum tissue is firm and pink. If your gums appear puffy, dark red, or feel sore to the touch, inflammation may be present.

4. Receding gumlines. If your teeth appear longer than they used to, or if you can see the yellowish root surfaces, your gums may be receding — a common sign of advancing periodontal disease.

5. Loose or shifting teeth. In advanced cases, periodontal disease destroys the bone that supports your teeth, causing them to become loose or shift position. This is a serious sign that requires immediate attention.

If you notice any of these symptoms, we recommend scheduling an evaluation with a board-certified periodontist. Early intervention is key to preserving your natural teeth and preventing further tissue and bone loss. At Grove Periodontists, we offer comprehensive periodontal evaluations and personalized treatment plans at our Richmond and Midlothian offices.
